Tarrant's Clothes - Worst To Best

A thorough judgment of Del Tarrant's wardrobe(not counting stolen clothes or spacesuits).

#11. "Tarrant the Racer"

WORN IN: The Harvest Of Kairos (3x05)

The striped jumpsuit look. To its credit, it looks pretty comfortable to wear, and works as a variation of Tarrant's flamboyant style for difficult terrain. But something has to be at the bottom, so I guess I'll nitpick this one. The colors are too bland for someone like Tarrant, I'm not sure what's going on around the shoulders and it just isn't very memorable or striking when compared to the rest.

#10. "Tarrant the Wild West Pub Doorway"

WORN IN: Rescue (4x01) - Headhunter (4x06)

Somebody glued a bunch of plastic panels onto this poor man! I'm not sure if Tarrant, being the hothead that he is, really suits blue, white and grey. But it's aesthetically pleasing, unique, and also something that I could imagine a futuristic pilot wearing. Not a terrible costume, not a great one either.

#9. "Tarrant the Wifebeater"

WORN IN: Ultraworld (3x10)

I think this outfit would work considerably better without the black cravat-looking thing covering up part of the leather vest. On first glance, it gives the impression that Tarrant's chosen to wear a slack sleeveless shirt over his turtleneck sweater, which is a fashion faux pas if I've ever seen one. This is also one of those outfits that reflects Tarrant replacing Blake amongst the crew. I prefer Tarrant to have his own style.

#8. "Tarrant the Arthouse Film"

WORN IN: Death-Watch (3x12)

Quite eccentric and creative, but I don't think black and white are Tarrant's colors at all. He's a flamboyant character, so all this starkness looks off to me. I'm also not fond of the short sleeves. Is it supposed to be a shirt? Why would one need to clasp it like that then? It's overdesigned and too experimental for Tarrant's tastes.

#7. "Tarrant the Colorblind"

WORN IN: Sarcophagus (3x09)

Red and light grey does not mix well, at least not in my eyes. Why not black and red? Not a huge fan of the frills on the sleeves either, though it seems to be a reference to Tarrant's warrior costume in the flashbacks. So I suppose there's some relevance to it. On a more positive note, I love that he went with a studded belt for this one. I also like the V-shaped front, which seems to be the costume designer's trademark, as it's all over the Series C outfits.

#6. "Tarrant the Prince"

WORN IN: City At The Edge Of The World (3x06) - Children Of Auron (3x07)

The comparisons to Blake's Robin Hood style are particularly relevant here. This could easily have been one of Gareth Thomas's outfits(albeit with a bit more room). What puts it so high up on this list is that it's very striking and elegant, and Pacey looks amazing in it. Not a great Tarrant costume per se, but just a fantastic design in general.

#5. "Tarrant the Folk Dancer"

WORN IN: Volcano (3x03), Rumours Of Death (3x08)

I'm not sure what it is about this getup, but it just looks fake to me. Not in the sense that Tarrant's character wouldn't wear it, but it doesn't look lived in, if that makes any sense. It looks like a specially made outfit that he's put on to celebrate at a festival of some sort. Still, it's good-looking(albeit somewhat lacking in color) and appropriately heroic for Tarrant.

#4. "Tarrant the Pirate"

WORN IN: Dawn Of The Gods (3x04), Moloch (3x11)

Green's my favourite color, so naturally I'm biased here. Similarly to my #6 choice, this is one of those outfits that looks more Gareth Thomas than Steven Pacey, but is aesthetically a total win, especially with the black turtleneck sweater. Black and green look swell together.

#3. "Tarrant the Officer"

WORN IN: Assassin (4x07) - Blake (4x13)

By the time we got to series D, much of Tarrant's rebelliousness had been burnt out and so it's fitting that his flamboyance got toned down in favor of a loyal soldier look, one who would follow Avon whilst still carrying enough authority to take charge and get things done when needed. I might prefer it if he had epaulets instead of that white stripe across his chest(looks a bit goofy), but the silver felt and overall simplicity of the costume work well for me.

#2. "Tarrant the Luxan"

WORN IN: Terminal (3x13) - Rescue (4x01)

Alright, leaving aside the hilarious similarity to Farscape costuming... the shoulderpads and the pragmatic zipper are obviously winners. And maroon can only ever be the choice of someone with a good nose for fashion. Style and dashing with pragmatic undertones suits Tarrant's modus operandi quite admirably. It's a memorable look that I actually wish had been carried over into Series D. It might've helped break up the grey monotony of those outfits without contradicting the grounded approach of that year.

#1. "Tarrant-ina Jones"

WORN IN: Children Of Auron (3x07)

Here, we see Tarrant dressed in a dusty, worn leather jacket from the 1950s and a medieval type shirt with strings instead of buttons. I can actually imagine Tarrant - being the wannabe hero that he is - putting this together in the Liberator wardrobe with his limited understanding of the actual historical backgrounds. But that aside, it just looks really cool and not something we've seen worn by anyone else in the show. Ironically, despite its desert colors, it's featured in the one episode where the crew aren't frolicking in a quarry.
